Breast cancer will kill 50,000 women in America this
year alone. Awareness of the disease by wearing breast cancer awareness
bracelets has helped tremendously.
The yellow 'LiveStrong' rubber cancer awareness bracelet worn by 7 time Tour de
France cycling champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong has created a
remarkable trend. Armstrong has effectively spread cancer awareness in the
society with his $1 yellow cancer awareness bracelets.
Next in popularity to the LiveStrong bracelets come the breast cancer awareness
bracelets are the next most popular cancer awareness bracelets. These bracelets
are available in many different colors, mostly in pink. The proceeds from the
cancer awareness bracelets go for cancer research.
The pink color breast cancer awareness bracelets have their roots in the efforts
of 68-year old Charlotte Haley who made and distributed peach ribbons in the
1990s with cards stating: "The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8
billion, only 5 per cent goes for cancer prevention. Help us wake up our
legislators and America by wearing this ribbon." When the ‘Self’ magazine
approached Haley to use her ribbon, she refused the offer, thinking it to be too
commercial. The magazine then popularized pink breast cancer awareness
bracelets.
Breast cancer awareness bracelets are now available in all colors and in all
materials—pearl, cat’s eye, metal, stainless steel, etc. There’s one for every
pocket. Rubber bracelets normally sell for around $1, while pearl ones go for
around $30 a piece. All these bracelets come with a message such as 'Support
Breast Cancer Research And Education'.
Rubber breast cancer awareness bracelets can be customized to any extent. These
all-weather, washable bracelets have now moved from cancer awareness messages to
any message you like to be stamped on them.
Cancer is a deadly disease. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. believes
more than 211,000 women to be diagnosed with breast cancer in America in 2005,
and 43,300 of these will succumb to the disease. One woman in eight is likely to
suffer from breast cancer, while 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer,
of which 400 will die this year.
